On Friday October 14th during our upcoming conference, WAML is hosting a field trip to Stanford's new Map Digitization Lab, in Green Library. The afternoon will include a presentation by Stuart Snydman, Manager of Digital Production, who will speak about the Stanford Libraries' digitization efforts. This will be followed by tours of the new Map Digitization Lab and a book scanning lab. We'll transport those who sign up by chartered bus (rescuing you from driving in the Friday afternoon traffic!). The field trip will be from 2-6, fitting in between the WAML luncheon with speaker Richard White, and the WAML banquet at 7. Cost will be $15, to cover the bus, payable by check made out to WAML. You can hand your check to Yvonne Wilson our treasurer as you hop on the bus.
If you'd like to take part in the field trip, please email me. Because we can take a limited number of people, it's first come, first served. Please sign up by next Friday, October 7th.

Janet Collins had the idea of creating a WAML memorial webpage on the WAML website in memory of the WAML members who have passed away since 1985. Janet is busy writing a book, so I've taken over the project, but I need your help. We will use the memorials that have been published in the IB, pictures from the IB memorials and from meetings, and anything else that people want to write about these people. Janet Collins and Michael Noga have written about Rich Spohn, Tim Ross has written about Maureen Wilson, Michael Noga has written about Wendy Hassibe, Michael Noga has written about Barbara Haner, we have a GSIS memorial for her, and Elaine Adams from UCLA is also writing about her, and everyone else has had a memorial in the IB. Please send me anything you would like to say about any of these people by October 17, 2011. We'd like to get the page up by the end of the year. You're also welcome to send pictures. The memorial service at the Hawaii meeting will have brief statements about each person, but the web page will have longer memorials. Although the memorial service in Hawaii will not be limited to WAML members, this memorial page will be limited to members.

LC Program for Cooperative Cataloging – updates on RDA initiatives

The reports of the three RDA-related task groups formed last June are coming in this month. The first of these, from the Task Group on AACR2 & RDA Acceptable Heading Categories, has now been posted and linked from http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/RDA-Acceptable-TG.html.
There is good news: Less than 5% of the 7.6 million name authority records need to undergo a heading change as part of RDA implementation. Of the 397 thousand NARs needing a change to the 1XX field in order to be used in RDA, 172 thousand can be changed by automated means. Over 95% of the existing authority record 1XX fields can be used in RDA without modification.
The report takes a holistic approach, and many of its recommended actions are intertwined. For the smoothest migration to RDA, the report recommends that we have a "Day 1" for authorities (the point after which all new additions to the authority file will reflect RDA).
The PCC Policy Committee endorses the task group's final report in principle, and we now welcome your comments, which may be used to further clarify the process of implementation. Please share your thoughts over PCCLIST (or write to coop@loc.gov) by October 21.

The second of the three reports of the RDA-related task groups formed last June, from the PCC Task Group on Hybrid Bibliographic Records, has now been posted and linked from http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/RDA-Hybrid-bib-TG.html.
The report offers general guidelines for working with RDA and AACR2 records during the transition period from AACR2 to RDA. The focus of the task group when discussing editing of records was to find ways to improve user access. Editing in a record will generally be done following the rules currently governing the description and will not change the record's bibliographic identity/integrity. The report addresses editing done by individual catalogers and recommends that batch/machine editing of existing records not occur prior to RDA implementation.
A set of six guides is provided, for PCC work at the network level on RDA and AACR2 records for monographic, serial, and integrating resources. Use of the guides will give us experience on which to base guidelines for the post-implementation period.
The PCC Policy Committee accepts the task group's report, and we now want to get community comment in order to learn of any needed adjustments to the guides. Please share your thoughts over PCCLIST (or write to coop@loc.gov) by October 21. An implementation date will be announced in the fall.

LC Program for Cooperative Cataloging – updates on BSRs and Provider-Neutral Record
PCC colleagues, October 1, 2011 is the implementation date for two new BSRs and for the revised Provider-Neutral Guidelines.
In recent months, the Standing Committee on Standards shared drafts for comments by the community and approval by the PCC Policy Committee (PoCo). The final versions of the documents below (based on AACR2 and the MARC Format for Bibliographic Data), appear on the PCC BIBCO home page.
1. BIBCO Standard Record for Archival Collections --includes MAP
2. BIBCO Standard Record Supplemental Requirements for Electronic Monographic Resources (Remote & Direct Access)--covers electronic resources for formats other than Leader/06 "m" (computer files). This is to be used in conjunction with the BSR for the particular format for the resources in that format that have digital aspects, e.g., digital maps.
3. Provider-Neutral E-Monograph MARC Record Guide (revised) for catalogers --implements the use of the 588 field for all online monographs and expands the coverage to other types of materials. See this link for further explanation of the use of 588 Field for Online Monographs.

Forthcoming Program on Form/Genre Headings
Coming December 9th! The Northern Ohio Technical Services Librarians (NOTSL) will hold its Fall Meeting at Kent State University’s Student Center. The Fall Meeting topic is focused on Form/Genre Headings used in cataloging. Speakers will include: Janis Young, from the Library of Congress Policy and Standards Division, featured speaker; Karen Anderson, Authority Control Librarian from Backstage Library Works; and Paige G. Andrew, Maps Cataloging Librarian, Pennsylvania State University. Janis will present an overview of the Library of Congress’ recent and ongoing changes to form/genre headings, Karen will be speaking about how changes to genre/form headings are impacting authority control vendors, and Paige will share a perspective of one Cataloging Department’s employment of form/genre headings in their work with a focus on cartographic form/genre headings.
