1. News

1.1 J. B Harley Research Fellowships Awarded

The Trustees of the J.B. Harley Research Fellowships Trust Fund are pleased to announce the sixth series of awards, offering support at a rate of 250 pounds per week. The fellowships are designed to assist research in the London map collections:

1.2 David Lundquist in Duty of Care

David Lundquist at UC Davis is mentioned in John McPhee's story "Duty of Care" in Irons in the Fire.

1.3 Helen Wallis Fellowship Available

An annual fellowship was recently established at the British Library to honour the memory of Helen Wallis and confer recognition by the Library on scholars whose work will promote the extended and complementary use of the British Library's book and cartographic collections. Dr Helen Wallis OBE was Map Librarian at the British Museum and then British Library (1967-86).

Preference will be given to proposals which both relate to the Library's collections and have an international dimension. Applicants will be expected to refer to the classes of material they intend to consult and to demonstrate how their research might be disseminated. The fellowship may be held as a full or part-time appointment, but would normally be for 6-12 months.

For more information, the web site is >A HREF="http://ihr.sas.ac.uk/maps/wallis.html">ihr.sas.ac.uk/maps/wallis.html

1.4 New exhibit featuring Erwin Raisz at the Harvard Map Collection

The Harvard Map Collection and The Boston Map Society are pleased to announce its upcoming exhibit: Erwin Raisz: 100 Years Of Art & Science in Cartography. The exhibit will include manuscript drawings, maps, journals, and publications of Harvard's most prominent mapmaker.

This exhibit will be at Harvard's Pusey Library, in Harvard Yard, from January 12 - July 1, 1999. The Library is open Monday - Friday 9 am - 5 pm.

1.5 World-Wide Review of "Guidelines for OPAC Displays" for IFLA

The Task Force on Guidelines for OPAC Displays invites your review of the proposed text for the "Guidelines for OPAC Displays."

The primary purpose of producing these guidelines is to bring together recommendations on a corpus of good practice to assist libraries in designing or re-designing their OPACs. Existing OPACs demonstrate differences in the range and complexity of their functional features. It was considered important to make recommendations on displays in order to work toward fulfulling recognized functions of catalogues.

The draft of the guidelines are available on the IFLAnet web site at www.ifla.org/ifla/VII/s13/guide/opac.htm The table of contents pages may temporarily be incorrect, since the change from Word97 to the online version changed page numbers. It is anticipated this will be corrected soon.

Please send your comments to Dorothy McGarry at dmcgarry@library.ucla.edu.

1.6 1999 Walter W. Ristow Prize in the History of Cartography and Map Librarianship

The Walter W. Ristow Prize seeks to recognize achievement in cartographic history and map librarianship and is awarded annually by the Washington Map Society.

The competition is open to all full or part-time upper-level undergraduate, graduate and first-year postdoctoral students attending accredited colleges or universities.

For more information about the criteria, please see the site www.cyberia.com/pages/jdocktor/ristow.htm.

1.7 Federal Geographic Data Committee Announces Funding Program for 1999

The Cooperative Agreements Program fosters partnerships among public and private organizations to assist in building the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI). The NSDI is the term used to describe the technologies, spatial data, public policies, people and institutions needed to put current and accurate geographic data into the hands of citizens and decision-makers.

Applications must be received on or before March 2, 1999. Copies of Program Announcement No. 99HQPA0005 for the NSDI Cooperative Agreements Program may be obtained through the Internet at www.usgs.gov/contracts/index.html.
