1. NEWS

1.1 Map cataloging questions

From ALA Mid-Winter, the Cataloging and Classification Group of MAGERT would like to encourage everyone to submi their map cataloging questions to the listserv, MAPS-L. This listserv has many map catalogers "lurking" about, waiting for questions and eager to help. Send questions to the address maps-l@uga.cc.uga.edu.

1.2 Digital Raster Graphics Availability

In the fall of 1996, National Mapping Division (NMD) discontinued production of Digital Raster Graphics (DRG's) on CD-ROM's for distribution from Denver. As a result of reduced funding for replication of CD-ROM's, slow sales of DRG's, and errors in the header files of DRG CD-ROM's, NMD has decided that DRG files will be sold in the same one-degree by one-degree block format now through the Sales Data Base. Errors in the header files have been corrected, and NMD is ready to begin filling customer orders for the approximately 400 one-degree blocks currently available and will continue to create one-degree DRG blocks until the whole country has been covered.

Each one-degree DRG product will usually contain sixty-four 1:24,000-scale files, two 1:100,000-scale files and one 1:250,000-scale file. DRG files will be provided on compact disc-recordable (CD-R) medium and will be produced as customers order them.

Mid-Continent Mapping Center (MCMC) has developed a World Wide Web site with information about DRG's. It contains a status graphic showing planned and available DRG blocks, an explanation of the header errors contained on the previously produced CD-ROM's with work-arounds for customers who purchased them, and two lists of available titles, one sorted by block number and one sorted by block name. The WWW site for more information about DRG's is http://mcmcweb.er.usgs.gov/drg/

1.3 Public Reviews of FGDC Standards

The Federal Geographic Data Committee announced public reviews of standards for soils data, a point profile for the Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS), standards for geospatial positioning accuracy, digital orthoimagery, and digital elevation data. The FGDC invites state and local governments, academia, and the public to review, test, and evaluate the proposed standards. Comments are encouraged about the content, completeness, and usability of these standards. After public review and revision the standards may be considered for adoption by the FGDC.

More information on the reviews, and digital versions of the standards can be obtained at:
