Internet Access To Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps Through LC - The December 1997 issue of the "Information Bulletin" from the Library of Congress includes an articles about Geography and Map Division's plans on internet access to the first 1,000,000 Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps. (Pages 358-359).

2.2 Other New Materials

2.2.1 Landview III - Landview III CD-ROMs will be released in mid-January. This 11 disk series will allow creation of customized street and thematic maps. It also includes some updated map features, additional data items from the 1990 Census, and data about EPA regulated sites. Search results from queries of the CDs can be exported to separate files in Dbase, Lotus, Excel or any fixed like text format. Also, each record in a user file can be matched by main latitude and longitude coordinates to the census tract and block group level.

2.2.2 Census Tract Street Index - A new Census Tract Street Index is expected out early 1998 with a new version of its Windows software and updated street addresses.

2.2.3 American Community Survey - The first data set from the American Community Survey due out in mid-March on CD-ROM and will include a software package called Beyond 2000 which allows viewing, charting and mapping of the data. The ACS is a new survey which collects information similar to that found in the decennial census, except that this data allow users to see updated data every year for small areas of geography. It is a sample of households and annual averages are developed. The survey was first conducted at 4 sites in 1995 and the data sets from 1995 are currently available at the Census web site along with a fuller explanation of the ACS. More sites will be added in years to come as the ACS is expanded.

2.4.2 Index and Inventory of USGS Maps - Chris Thiry wishes to announce the release of "Index and Inventory of USGS Maps Using Microsoft Access, Version 1.1". He corrected errors found in the 1.0 version--most noteworthy were omission of many maps. Also, he updated the datebase through USGS Depository Shipping List 98-05. The database can be found at in "downloadable databases" section of our homepage at http://www.mines.edu/library/maproom/
