1.3 New features added to INSIDE Idaho website

From Lily Wai lwai@uidaho.edu

New features added to INSIDE Idaho Website http://inside.uidaho.edu

1.4 The Sharlot Hall Museum Archives creates online graphical database

From Michael Wurtz, Archivist wurtz@sharlot.org

The Sharlot Hall Museum Archives in Prescott, Arizona has created, a unique interface for looking at their historic map collection. It is a graphical database where researchers who visit the web site can click the location they are interested in on an index map. That click will bring up a list of historic maps in the collection that cover that particular point.

The Sharlot Hall Museum Archives is hoping that archivists, map librarians, and historians could visit the site: http://www.sharlot.org/archives and click on Graphical Database to check out how this works. The museum is interested in obtaining any feedback that users have and also if you know of other graphical searches that exist for historical maps. The Sharlot Hall Museum Archives has over 4000 maps in their collection. However, only MARC records for about 200 of these have been created so far (all of which can be accessed through the graphical database) and only about 30 of those have an image linked to them.

1.5 Articles from the Proceedings of the European Mapcurator Group 2000 now online

From Jan Smits Jan.Smits@kb.nl

The following articles, which are the Proceedings of the 12th Conference of the European Mapcurator's Group 2000, have been added to the GdC-websites:
Full-text articles (in alphabetical order of author) http://www.kb.nl/infolev/liber/intro.htm#art
BIBLIOGRAPHY (arranged by subject) http://www.kb.nl/infolev/liber/overview.htm#subject
The articles are recognizable from the NEW image.

1.6 Doctorates relating to the history of cartography

From: Tony Cambell

Doctorates relating to the history of cartography (awarded from 1995 onwards) . This site represents an amalgamation of annual listings appearing in the Personal News section of the Chronicle in Imago Mundi since vol. 50 (1998). Some of the information was obtained from ProQuest Digital Dissertations, which gives access to UMI's Dissertation Abstracts database (apparently restricted to US and Canada). Another site which offers the possibility of searching across a number of sites simultaneously is the ETD Digital Library: the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD).For more information see: http://ihr.sas.ac.uk/maps/phd.html

1.7 FGDC releases three standards for public review

From Julie Binder Maitra jmaitra@usgs.gov

The Federal Geodetic Data Committee (FGDC) is conducting a public review of three standards:

The FGDC invites GIS data producers and users and software vendors to comment on the standards to ensure that the standards meet the needs of their communities. To learn about the standards and how to submit comments on the standards, visit the FGDC What's New web page at: http://www.fgdc.gov/whatsnew/whatsnew.html . Reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the template for sending comments that may be downloaded from: http://www.fgdc.gov/standards/directives/dir2d.html.

Public review comments that address specific issues/changes/additions may result in revisions that enhance the usefulness of the standards for their communities. After comments have been evaluated, reviewers will receive notification of how their comments were addressed. After formal endorsement of the standard by the FGDC, the standard and a summary analysis of the changes will be made available to the public via the FGDC Web site.

1.8 MAGERT now an associate sponsor of GIS Day

From Chris Kollen kollenc@u.library.arizona.edu

The Map and Geography Round Table (MAGERT) of the American Library Association announced that it is now an Associate Sponsor of GIS Day.
GIS or geographic information systems represents computer software, data and solutions that are used by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide in government, education and business. GIS Day is a grassroots event that formalizes the practice of geographic information system (GIS) users and vendors opening their doors to schools, businesses, and the general public to showcase real-world applications of this important technology. The goal is to help educate children as well as adults on the applications of geography and computer- aided mapping. The second year of this event saw thousands of events in 81 countries. The principal sponsors of GIS Day include:

MAGERT, the world's largest map library organization, has been involved in GIS for the past several years. The Geographic Technologies Committee of MAGERT has sponsored a program at the annual American Library Association conference for the past several years on GIS which has included:

1.9 Alice Hudson winner of 2001 Sloan Public Service Award

Alice Hudson, of the New York Public Library's Map Division was recently honored with a prestigious award. The Fund for the City of New York named Alice a winner of the 2001 Sloan Public Service Awards. The awards program recognizes outstanding civil servants whose work performance and commitment to the public transcend not merely the ordinary but the extraordinary -- day after day and year after year. On March 14, representatives of the Fund visited the New York Public Library to present Alice with her award, as they visited the workplaces of the seven other recipients. Then in the evening, all honorees, officials, friends, relatives and co-workers gathered at the Great Hall of Cooper Union where each of the eight was introduced. The Fund cited Alice for being tirelessly dedicated to encouraging the public to use the collection which she has developed and promoted [as] the largest public library map collection in the United States.
