1.3 New features added to INSIDE Idaho website
From Lily Wai lwai@uidaho.edu
New features added to INSIDE Idaho Website http://inside.uidaho.edu
- The TIGER95 data are complete. Instead of just being able to download all 29 themes for a county at one time, users can download the themes individually now. We are getting ready for the new Census 2000 data releases and our site will host both the population data and the TIGER data for our state, when they are ready sometime in the spring. This is just a preview of what is to come. Ten libraries in the state will be involved in providing public access to these data and for the Redistricting process that is to take place in the summer months this year.
- The Tutorial section is finally done. The detailed step by step tutorial is designed to help users understand how the website is organized, what data are available, and how they can use the data.
- Based on the excellent suggestion from a GIS professional we have made the following changes to the metadata section:
- The source image date is now presented when the user selects the Quarter-Quad Info radio button prior to downloading the DOQQs. Additionally, that suggestion was taken a step further. For the - 1:24,000 DRGs in UTM - 1:100,000 DRGs in UTM - 1:250,000 DRGs in UTM - DOQQs in UTM
- Users can now view metadata for the individual files. There is a User Defined Link at the top of each of the series level metadata for user to access the individual file level metadata.
- Some people were having difficulty using the map interface (downloading 7.5-minute DRGs and 3.75-minute DOQQs). A help link has been added to explain the process.
1.4 The Sharlot Hall Museum Archives creates online graphical database
From Michael Wurtz, Archivist wurtz@sharlot.org
The Sharlot Hall Museum Archives in Prescott, Arizona has created, a unique interface for looking at their historic map collection. It is a graphical database where researchers who visit the web site can click the location they are interested in on an index map. That click will bring up a list of historic maps in the collection that cover that particular point.
The Sharlot Hall Museum Archives is hoping that archivists, map librarians, and historians could visit the site: http://www.sharlot.org/archives and click on Graphical Database to check out how this works. The museum is interested in obtaining any feedback that users have and also if you know of other graphical searches that exist for historical maps. The Sharlot Hall Museum Archives has over 4000 maps in their collection. However, only MARC records for about 200 of these have been created so far (all of which can be accessed through the graphical database) and only about 30 of those have an image linked to them.

1.6 Doctorates relating to the history of cartography
Doctorates relating to the history of cartography (awarded from 1995 onwards) . This site represents an amalgamation of annual listings appearing in the Personal News section of the Chronicle in Imago Mundi since vol. 50 (1998). Some of the information was obtained from ProQuest Digital Dissertations, which gives access to UMI's Dissertation Abstracts database (apparently restricted to US and Canada). Another site which offers the possibility of searching across a number of sites simultaneously is the ETD Digital Library: the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD).For more information see: http://ihr.sas.ac.uk/maps/phd.html
1.7 FGDC releases three standards for public review
From Julie Binder Maitra jmaitra@usgs.gov
The Federal Geodetic Data Committee (FGDC) is conducting a public review of three standards:
- The Address Data Content Standard (comments due June 22, 2001)
- The NSDI Framework Transportation Identification Standard (comments due July 20, 2001)
- The Standard for a U.S. National Grid (comments due June 22, 2001)
The FGDC invites GIS data producers and users and software vendors to comment on the standards to ensure that the standards meet the needs of their communities. To learn about the standards and how to submit comments on the standards, visit the FGDC What's New web page at: http://www.fgdc.gov/whatsnew/whatsnew.html . Reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the template for sending comments that may be downloaded from: http://www.fgdc.gov/standards/directives/dir2d.html.
Public review comments that address specific issues/changes/additions may result in revisions that enhance the usefulness of the standards for their communities. After comments have been evaluated, reviewers will receive notification of how their comments were addressed. After formal endorsement of the standard by the FGDC, the standard and a summary analysis of the changes will be made available to the public via the FGDC Web site.

2.4.5 Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) has moved to a new server
From Roger L Payne rpayne@usgs.gov
The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) online (Web) service has moved to a new server at: http://geonames.usgs.gov
This new Web site and service will host not only heavy-traffic GNIS Web service, but a consolidated set of pages about the Board on Geographic Names (BGN), toponymy, general information on geographic names, and related topics as well.
We request that Webmasters please update any links beginning with either of the following two URL bases:
- http://mapping.usgs.gov:8888/ ...
- http://www-nmd.usgs.gov:8888/ ...
Please be aware that if your site contains any embedded queries, it will not be sufficient just to change the server name from mapping.usgs.gov:8888 to geonames.usgs.gov. The (virtual) path names used in queries have changed (as we have advanced from Oracle's OWS to Oracle's IAS application server), as have the names of the query procedures themselves. Please visit the new site and use the query forms if you need to determine the new query paths and procedure names.
