1.1.

Our Earth as Art: A Landsat Perspective

The USGS EROS Data Center (EDC) exhibit of Landsat 7 scenes is now showing at the Art Hallway at USGS headquarters, Reston, Virginia. From more than 200,000 U.S. archive images collected since April of 1999, forty-one were selected for their aesthetic value rather than their scientific information. Special processing and spectral bands were used to "create" a different perspective of Planet Earth. The exhibit has also been displayed at the Sioux Falls Washington Pavilion Visual Arts Center. 

Because of the great interest generated by this exhibit, USGS EDC is making copies of the images available for sale to the public! A list of the images is available at http://edcwww.cr.usgs.gov/l7dhf/ias_folder/artscenecatalog.pdf . Each image is printed on a light jet printer, is approximately 26" x 27," and includes a brief description of the scene. These are in color, but not on "photographic paper", but on regular printer paper. The price for each scene is $30.00 plus $5.00 handling per order. Historical Boston Maps Added to Rumsey Collection

David Rumsey Collection announces the addition of 18 historical maps of the Boston area from 1776 through 1897 for viewing in its GIS Browser -- available online at www.davidrumsey.com.

The GIS Browser allows integration and interaction of historical maps with current geospatial data and other historical maps. Additional historic maps of U.S. cities will be added in the near future including Washington, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver, and Seattle.

The current geospatial data that can be overlaid and compared to the historical maps includes roads, lakes, parks, state boundaries, digital orthophotos (aerial photography), topographic mapsheets, digital elevation models and satellite imagery. The GIS Browser is available in two versions on the site, a GIS Basic Browser for those new to GIS and a GIS Professional Browser for those familiar with GIS conventions.

Louisiana Geological Survey Publishes New Geologic Maps

By the end of 2002, the Louisiana Geological Survey plans to have published 1:100,000 scale geologic maps for the Crowley, DeRidder, Lake Charles, and Ville Platte 1:100,000 quadrangles. (The DeRidder and Ville Platte maps could be finished by the end of July.) All of these maps illustrate very significant revisions in the Quaternary geology of Southwest Louisiana.

Global Climate 2001 Database Now Available from EarthInfo

EarthInfo's Global Climate database is one of the most extensive collections of global weather data available on CD. This database has proven to be a valuable resource for universities, libraries and research facilities worldwide. Global Climate contains period-of-record temperature and precipitation data from over 27,000 stations, some dating back to the 1600's. EarthInfo's access software is provided along with the CD for quick and easy data retrieval.

New Volume of the Antique Map Record

Volume 17 of the Antique Map Price Record (commonly known as "Jolly", after its initial publisher) has just been published by MapRecord Publications. Unlike the previous 16 print volumes, starting with volume 17 the Price Record is being published electronically, as a CD-ROM for Windows (95, 98, 2000, NT or XP).

In addition to containing new data for volume 17, the CD-ROM contains all the data from the previous 16 volumes. It thereby provides a searchable database of over 80,000 records of antiquarian maps listed by dealers or sold at auction, spanning a period of nearly 20 years.

The historical data (from volumes 1-16) has been enriched by the addition of more carto-bibliographical references, and the entire database has been reviewed for increased accuracy and consistency in map titles.

With volume 17, the publication of the Antique Map Price Record has changed hands. Between 1983 and 1992 the compiler and publisher was David Jolly. >From 1993 through 2001, the publisher was Jon Rosenthal (under the name Kimmel Publications). As of 2002, the publisher is Jeremy Pool (under the name MapRecord Publications).

NIMA Data Sets Available from East View Cartographic

Just over one year ago East View Cartographic launched a concerted effort to discover, add value to, and bring to market a wide range of global mapping data in digital GIS formats produced by the US military, specifically by NIMA (the National Imagery and Mapping Agency). 

The core of these new products is the vector GIS VMAP™ data sets. Taken together, they represent a huge leap forward from the relatively well-known "Digital Chart of the World" or DCW data sets which became available about a decade ago. 

East View Cartographic has a web site dedicated to these new NIMA products and their derivatives: http://www.cartographic.com/geospatial_data.asp.

East View Cartographic will constantly update this section as new digital content becomes available, as new products are developed from this data, and as they introduce new services relating to these data with map libraries in mind. Thier objective is to make this portion of theirr web site the premier global source for comprehensive, yet easy-to-understand, information on the new generation of GIS data.

At present map librarians have two global GIS data sets to choose from, whose core data come from NIMA:
Vector Map Level 0 (VMAP0™) and Vector Map Level 1 (VMAP1™)
VMAP0 (formerly DCW) is now in its fifth edition (Sep. 2000) from NIMA. It is a truly global data set based primarily on the vectorized versions of 1:1,000,000 scale NIMA Operational Navigation Charts (ONCs). Thus some 300-plus paper ONC charts have been vectorized to produce a global database which is split into four geographic zones, each available on a single CD-ROM.

VMAP1 is very much a work in progress. When completed, it will also be a global data set. It is based primarily on the vectorized versions of 1:250,000 scale NIMA Joint Operations Graphics (JOGs)—nearly 10,000 sheets. The VMAP1 data is divided into a rather complex global mosaic of 234 geographic zones, with each available on a single CD-ROM. As of this writing, not all zones are fully produced, and only a bit more than a quarter—some 63 CD-ROMs—are fully declassified and available to the public.

Both VMAP0 and VMAP1 are structured similarly, and contain all the standard topographic vector data types familiar to GIS users. Data content includes 10 thematic layers: boundaries and coastlines; elevation and contour lines; road and rail networks; hydrography; utility networks; vegetation cover; and so on. These themes are arranged in over 100 vector layers of information, with mass numbers of features, attributes, and geographic names appropriate to their respective scales.

As with all vector GIS data sets, format is a critically important issue. NIMA makes its VMAP products available only in so-called VPF (Vector Product Format), which is not readily manipulated by the GIS software packages (ArcView, MapInfo) familiar to most map library users. To be easily usable to most people, the VPF-format data should be converted to SHP, TAB, or other vector formats (DXF, DGN, etc.).

East View therefore offers map libraries a choice for the new VMAP data sets:
either the "raw“ VPF data straight from NIMA, or the re-formatted vector data in SHP, TAB and other formats as appropriate to each map library.

In raw VPF format we offer the data sets as follows:
VMAP0™, set of four CDs: US$115
VMAP1™, set of 63 CDs: US$495

Libraries also have the option of setting up standing orders for new editions and new CDs as they are released by NIMA. This is a fantastic value, and by far the most economical way to get this data into a map library.

Many libraries will want to let their patrons hit the ground running with the more common GIS formats, and therefore East View offers all of the VMAP data in the popular GIS formats mentioned above. Because of the substantial value added by East View’s programmers, these VMAP data sets are a bit more expensive. Pricing is as follows:

One to ten CDs US $95 each
11-25 CDs US $75 each
over 25 CDs US $50 each

With every CD purchased, East View will also supply a downloadable MARC record to aid in the cataloging of what may be a completely new resource for many libraries.

About the University and the Libraries The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Head of Data Services. The Libraries' innovative Spatial and Numeric Data Services program provides access to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software, training, and data resources, serving faculty, students, and staff across the university. These services are based in the Research and Information Services Department (18 librarians, 6 support staff, and graduate assistants) and involve collaboration with others throughout the Libraries. Collaboration also takes place with Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN) colleagues, faculty-led research groups, University Extension, and digital library colleagues across the country and internationally. The Libraries is a selective Federal documents depository and a member of the InterUniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR).

Responsibilities
Leads the development and management of spatial and numeric data resources and services supporting teaching, research, and extension in all colleges within the university. Maintains a high level of expertise in spatial and numeric data resources and applications, GIS, metadata standards and trends, and user-oriented digital library environments. Monitors and evaluates emerging software applications for data analysis, display, and management, including Web-based tools available to users regardless of time or location. Consults with faculty and students to analyze data needs and to locate and deliver data in appropriate formats. Working closely with reference librarians, Digital Library Initiatives staff, government information specialists, and collection managers, develops policies and procedures for the selection, organization, delivery, updating, and archiving of data collections. Directs the collection and development of metadata to enable effective data retrieval and use. Serves as N.C. State's official representative to the ICPSR. Coordinates the design and delivery of general and discipline-specific instructional sessions for the campus community, and of Web-based tutorials, data documentation, and research resources. Establishes policies and software/data configurations for the Libraries' public GIS workstations. Educates library staff in the use of data resources. Leads the Libraries' GIS Team. Fosters outreach and collaboration with state and local government agencies. Serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams. Librarians at the NCSU Libraries are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. Reports to the Head of Research and Information Services.

Qualifications
Required: ALA-accredited MLS. Three or more years relevant professional experience. Professional experience with spatial and numeric data resources and familiarity with current issues, technologies, and software applications related to those resources. Demonstrated proficiency with GIS software applications such as ArcView. Demonstrated proficiency with the identification, retrieval, and manipulation of data resources. Familiarity with electronic government resources such as census and statistical data. Experience developing Web-based instructional materials. Strong planning and management skills. Understanding of the educational mission of a research university and the changing learning environment. Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate clearly, knowledgeably, and personably, orally and in writing, with clients and colleagues. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment; ability to work independently. Demonstrated record of professional contributions. Preferred: Three or more years relevant professional experience in an academic or research library. Significant computing experience in a networked, multiplatform environment. Experience with ICPSR data resources and services. Familiarity with social sciences statistical software applications such as SAS and SPSS.

Salary and Benefits
The Libraries offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, not less than $45,000 for this position, with required qualifications and not less than $50,000 with preferred qualifications. Librarians have academic status without tenure or rank. Benefits include: 24 days vacation, 12 days sick leave; comprehensive major medical insurance, and state, TIAA/CREF or other retirement options. NACIS Call for Papers -- Deadline May 31

The NACIS (North American Cartographic Information Society) will be meeting on October 9-13, 2002 in Columbus, Ohio at the Adams Mark Hotel.

The Call for Participation has gone out with abstracts due to the program chair, Gordon Kennedy, by May 31, 2002.

NACIS has existed for about 22 years and is an organization of librarians, teaching faculty, cartographers and GIS professionals (city, state, county, federal, corporate, free-lance). Annual membership is $42.00/year, registration costs at the annual conference run about $125 (includes significant amounts of food; workshops and fieldtrips extra and optional) and there is a journal (Cartographic Perspectives) as well as a Web site: WWW.NACIS.ORG. Anyone who has an interest in cartography, digital or otherwise, is encourgaged to participate.

Maps provide essential and efficient delivery of information for all types of subjects across time. Ecology, history, property, archaeology, events in the news -- all can be clarified by the cartographer's artistic and scientific hand, or via geographic information systems. During this 2-week institute you will explore the intricacies of map collecting in local and national libraries, as well as private collectors. Map librarianship will be studied in seminars with The New York Public Library's distinguished Map Librarians, and through visits to local map libraries, map stores and antiquarian dealers. Participants will draw upon this information and experience to investigate and evaluate specific research areas and topics.

This is a three credit graduate level course in the Master of Science in Library and Information Science program at Pratt Institute. Tuition is $637 per credit plus incidental fees. Registration is limited to 15 students and auditing is not permitted. Anyone who is not a matriculated student in the MS program at Pratt must apply and register using a "Visiting/Special Student" application. This can be requested from the SILS Office by sending a request to vthomas@pratt.edu. It must be accompanied by a copy of a transcript proving completion of at least a baccalaureate degree. Proof of medical coverage must also be provided by submitting copies of the front and back of the health insurance card. Auditing of this course will not be possible.
