1. News

1.1 WAML Fall 1998 Meeting, Library of Congress, Geography and Map Division, 16 - 18 September 1998

The Geography and Map Division is pleased to host the Fall 1998 meeting of the Western Association of Map Libraries. Knowing that many members of WAML have not had the opportunity to visit us before, we have planned a program that will provide opportunities to see our facilities, view our collections, and meet and discuss professional issues with the staff and administrators of the Division.

We are intentionally planning a schedule that has plenty of free time for interaction among WAML members and staff of the Geography and Map Division.

1.2 Joint Meeting in Washington, DC to following WAML

Planning to attend WAML in Washington, DC? Then why not plan to stay a little longer and join geoscience librarians and editors from around the world who will meet September 9-14, 1998 in Washington, DC for a joint meeting of the Association of Earth Science Editors, European Association of Science Editors and the 6th International Conference on Geoscience Information, GeoInfo VI.

For more information, visit the conference site at "http://earth.agu.org/editorinfo98."

1.3 USGS will stay in Menlo Park - Geological Survey will stay in Menlo Park according to a March 3rd article in San Francisco Chronicle.

1.4 NSGIC Solicits Submissions

The NSGIC is currently accepting articles, state activities updates, special announcements, research findings, suggested resources and notable quotes. The NSGIC News is the official newsletter of NSGIC read by over 900 GIS professionals worldwide. Send your submissions to the editor, Bill Burgess at:

e-mail: wburgess@dnr.state.md.us, fax: 410-260-8759, address: Geographic Information Services, Dept. of Natural Resources, Tawes State Office Building D-2, 580 Taylor Avenue, Annapolis, MD 21401-2397

1.5 USGS changes name of Miscellaneous Investigations Series to Geologic Investigation Series

August 1996, the USGS changed the I-map series name from Miscellaneous Investigations Series to Geologic Investigations Series. All geologic maps approved for publication after August 1996 will be published in the Geologic Investigation Series. However, maps approved for publication before that date will have the Miscellaneous Investigation Series name. Eventually all maps will be in the Geologic Investigation Series. They are still called I-maps and the definition of the series remains the same.

Both series I-maps are listed in the "New Publications of the U.S. Geological Survey" and the list can be seen at http://pubs.usgs.gov/publications/index.html.

2.2 Other New Materials

2.2.1 New Version of dlgv32 Allows Viewing of DLG/SDTS Data - The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is releasing the latest version of its free digital data viewing software, dlgv32.v.3.0. Users can now view DLG Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS) files as well as Digital Line Graph Optional (DLG-O) and Digital Raster Graphic (DRG) geospatial files. dlgv32 is a Windows 95 software and offers basic data viewing and manipulation functions such as convenient data loading, pan and zoom capabilities, point-to-point measurements, and the viewing of DLG and SDTS attribute codes. Another feature of the software is the simultaneous viewing of multiple data files and formats, such as vector DLG-O and raster DRG data. Instructions for downloading the software, the users manual and SDTS tutorial, and sample data files can be accessed through the dlgv32 and dem3d Software Links web page http://mcmcweb.er.usgs.gov/viewers/dlg_view.html.
