1.1 Terra Spacecraft Open for Business

After a picture-perfect launch into space last December, NASA's premier Earth Observing System Satellite, Terra, has completed on-orbit checkout and verification and is open for business. Two of the Terra instruments -- the Multiangle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) and the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) -- are managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. Terra, an international mission and part of NASA's Earth Sciences Enterprise, is opening a new window to the Earth and is providing daily information on the health of the planet. The first images from the five instruments aboard Terra were presented at a press briefing at NASA Headquarters, Washington, D.C., and can be viewed at http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/new and http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/pictures/terra

Terra is the first satellite to monitor daily -- and on a global scale -- how the Earth's atmosphere, lands, oceans, solar radiation and life influence each other. Terra's wide array of measurements will give a comprehensive evaluation of the Earth as a system and will establish a new basis for long-term monitoring of the Earth's climate changes.

1.3 Field 052-Input standard correction in TB236

From: Ellen R. Caplan caplane@oclc.org to various lists, April 2000.

In the print version of Technical Bulletin 236, the input standard for Field 052 (Geographic Classification) is 'Optional'. This standard is correct for all formats, except Maps. In the Maps format, field 052 remains 'Mandatory' at Full Level and 'Optional' at Minimal Level. The web version, http://www.oclc.org/oclc/tb/tb236/index.htm, was corrected on March 31, 2000. The input standard in Bibliographic Formats and Standards is correct.

1.4 Large-Format Map Products for Census 2000 : Guide To Map Plotting Devices

Many of the map products the Census Bureau will produce to support Census 2000 will be available to the public in various electronic file formats. Each map type will be available in one or more file formats depending on the map requirements and specifications. Some predefined map types, such as the County Block Map and the Census Tract Outline Map, will be available in both Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language (HP-GL) and Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF). Other specialized maps, such as thematic wall maps, will be available in PDF and/or PostScript format.

Maps in HP-GL format are provided to facilitate high volume map plotting. Maps provided in PDF format are intended for viewing, navigating, and printing using the current version of Adobe's free software product, Acrobat Reader. On many output devices, maps in PostScript format provide the highest image quality at the expense of file size and processing efficiency.

The Census Bureau will produce copies of the P.L. 94-171 and other Census 2000 map products in HP-GL format using the device specifications below. If maps are plotted by users on different output devices, the results may vary. Printing devices often interpret graphic elements and colors differently, therefore, variations in the output are possible. Variations also are possible when plotting maps on different printers produced by the same manufacturer.

CENSUS MAPS IN HP-GL FORMAT DESIGNED FOR OUTPUT ON THE FOLLOWING DEVICE:

The Census Bureau does not endorse the use of a particular manufacturer's product for plotting maps. Therefore, below are general hardware specifications that will guide users in selecting an output device capable of plotting Census Bureau map products.

Useful Device Options

Since all map products to support Census 2000 will be available in PDF format, as well as selected high quality maps in PostScript format, a PostScript Level 2 or 3 interpreter may be advantageous. To achieve the highest output quality, PDF and PostScript files should be plotted on output devices that have a PostScript interpreter. An internal hard disk also is useful to allow more efficient queue management and to maximize system throughput. On some devices, the hard disk is only utilized to facilitate the processing of PDF and PostScript files.

Software and related issues

It is recommended that the HP-GL files are plotted directly from Unix, MS-DOS or software applications distributed by the Census Bureau. Plotting the files from within other applications is not recommended since the results are not predictable. When printing a map image, some applications may convert the map image to a different electronic format that is recognized by the output device. In these cases, the appearance and quality of the map images may vary.

1.7 Update from the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) front

From: James Boxall jcboxall@is.dal.ca to various lists, April 2000.

I have been meaning to jot down a quick note to let each of you know what is happening on the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) front. GeoConnections is the coordinating secretariat that looks after assisting those who are going to collaborate on building the CGDI. Part of the building process requires very specific actions, such as establishing standards for description (metadata), tools for processing and working with the data provided on-line, search engines for finding the right data source, and integrating framework data layers (streets, geodetic framework, placenames, etc).

ACMLA is extremely lucky to have several members on a variety of GeoConnections nodes/working/advisory groups/committees. I wanted to highlight that particular fact and to suggest that if you have any concerns or wish to provide input, please contact those persons first.

I would also like to suggest interested persons review the GeoConnections web site to see if there is an area where they would like to volunteer their expertise. http://www.geoconnections.org

At present, the Policy Node has an RFP out for a study on data pricing, distributions and economics for geospatial information in Canada; a comparative study between Canada, the US and Australia. More info should be coming across the geoconnections web site soon. I am sure a note will be coming from Grace to CARTA when developments occur on that front.

Again, please contact the various ACMLA reps on the nodes and panels for further info....and in the near future, we will be adding a link from our ACMLA home page which will include briefing documents and notes from GeoConnections.

2.4 Internet Resources

2.4.1 Launching of the NEMO website

From: Paige Andrew pga@psulias.psu.edu to various lists, April 2000.

I am very pleased to announce the launching, by David Bertuca our NEMO Newsletter Editor at SUNY-Buffalo, of a brand new website to serve the members of the North East Map Organization as well as to give non-members a place to find the latest doings within NEMO. The website can be found at: http://ublib.buffalo.edu/libraries/units/sel/collections/maps/nemo.html and I urge you to take a look at the site and provide feedback to David.

In particular, I believe David would like to have permission to link to other similar websites from this homepage. But, of course, he would also like to gather ideas and suggestions for changes and improvements as well. I am personally thrilled that NEMO now has a presence on the Web, and Look forward to using it as a major communication tool for the Organization. Thanks again go to David for putting the time and effort into launching this site.

2.4.2 Ask a Map or GIS Librarian Makes Debut

From: dyallen@notes.cc.sunysb.edu to various lists, April 2000.

As a service to the profession, MAGERT has added a new page to its Website. The page can be found by clicking on "How to Get Help from Colleagues" on the MAGERT home page available at: http://www.sunysb.edu/libmap/magert1.htm

The How to Get Help from Colleagues page refers people to Maps-L, other listservs, and WAML's Map Librarian's Tool Box. In addition we are instituting a new service--intended only for other librarians or cartographic information specialists--called Ask a Map or GIS Librarian. We list there a number of people who are willing to consult by e-mail or phone concerning professional questions that may not be appropriate for discussion on a listserv. Please do not hestitate to use this service.

Also, additional volunteers to serve as expert consultants in specific areas would be welcome.

2.4.3 Geomorphometry LIST

From: George Miliaresis gmiliar@central.ntua.gr to various lists, April 2000.

Geomorphometry : A mailing list that points out information resources for the geomorphometry and the processing of digital elevation models, related conferences, data availability, algorithms and methods, scientific news, etc. The aim is to promote geomorphometry to new scientists and to integrate advances in geomorphometry and news that are distributed in various fields (remote sensing, geography, geology, surveying, etc.). For more information see http://www.onelist.com/community/geomorphometry

2.4.4 1998 NORTAD: Border Crossings

Border Crossing databases included in the NORTAD are highway and rail facilities located at the border of the United States and Canada or the United States and Mexico. For more information see http://www.bts.gov/gis/ntatlas/bdrx.html

The Highway facilities is a point database of highway border crossing facilities between the United States and Canada or the United States and Mexico (compiled at a base scale of 1:1,000,000).

From: D. E. McDonald mcdonaldde@mail.ecu.edu to various lists, April 2000.

We now have a web page for our map collection! This page includes information about the types of maps contained in our collection and other map resources we thought would be helpful to our patrons in searching for maps. Questions and comments are welcome!

The page can be accessed at http://www.lib.ecu.edu/govdoc/MapCollection.html

2.4.6 TenLinks.com Releases the Ultimate Mapping/GIS Directory

TenLinks.com, maker of tech directories has released a new directory of Mapping and GIS sites at http://www.tenlinks.com/MapGIS/index.htm.

The directory includes links to newsletters, bibliographies, tutorials, data sites, university GIS departments, etc.

2.4.7 Map cataloging tools

From: Terry Reese Terry.Reese@orst.edu to various lists, April 2000.

I thought that I would share a little tool that I developed to make my map cataloging a little Bit easier, that being the G-schedule (at least the maps and atlases) online. Hopefully you will find it as useful as I do. The website is: http://ucs.orst.edu/~reeset/tools.html.

This will take you to my tools page. A lot of the tools I use can be found at other locations so you might not find these as useful. If you would like to go directly to the schedule, it is at: http://ucs.orst.edu/~reeset/g_schedule.html

2.4.8 Map Link's rustic website is up

Map Link finally has a rustic version of a website up and running! The address is http://www.maplink.com.

Comments, both positive and/or negative, are welcome as your feedback is extremely valuable. Unfortunately, at the moment, the site is not very good for looking up foreign topographical maps but does work fairly well for city, state and country maps.

2.4.9 Epidemiology maps by John Snow available online

From: Ralph R. Frerichs frerichs@ucla.edu to various lists, April 2000.

I am writing to present two map sites (both non-commercial), created at UCLA for public health students, but also of interest to those who enjoy cartography. The first site contains several maps, but is primarily about Dr. John Snow, a nineteenth century British physician with an interesting scientific past. The second is a single large map of London from 1859, with internal ties to various historical locations.

2.4.10 Women and Heart Disease: An Atlas of Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Mortality

From: Ralph Vaughn rxv2@cdc.gov to various lists, April 2000.

The CDC/ATSDR GIS Server is now on-line at http://gis.cdc.gov. Currently on the GIS Server is the NCCDPHP publication Women and Heart Disease: An Atlas of Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Mortality.

2.4.11 New image on NASAs Planetary Photojournal and the SRTM Website

There is a new image on NASAs Planetary Photojournal and the SRTM Website. This shaded relief image was generated using topographic data from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission. The area shown is the south end of the North Island of New Zealand. The city of Wellington is on the left side (west) of the large bay on the bottom (south) coast. The sharp line cutting through the topography that passes through Wellington is the active Wellington Fault. Another active fault, the Wairarapa Fault, cuts along the west side of the Wairarapa Valley in the center of the image. This fault was the site of an earthquake in 1855 that may have involved as much as 12 meters (40 feet) of fault slip. The URLs are available at:

2.4.12 English summaries of Cartographica Helvetica articles available

The Editors of Cartographica Helvetica, Swiss Journal on the History of Cartography, are very pleased to announce issue 21. Summaries of the main articles in English and in German are available at: http://www.stub.unibe.ch/dach/ch/ch/ch-index.html

2.4.13 Contents pages of the 51 published volumes of Imago Mundi

From: Tony Campbell tony.campbell@bl.uk to various lists, April 2000.

On behalf of all those involved with the present production of Imago Mundi, I would like to thank Piero Falchetta for his excellent work in listing out the contents pages of the 51 published volumes of the journal, and mounting them at: http://geoweb.venezia.sbn.it/geoweb/HSL/ImagoMundi/ImagoMundi.html

In case Piero's title, Cumulative Index, raises any false hopes that this is an index to the body of the 51 volumes, I should say that we are continuing our active search for a way of producing an automated index to the full IM text. Much useful advice has been received. We now have to decide which route to follow (or which route we can afford) and then start getting quotations.

The site is accessible only Monday-Friday 8-6 (Central Europe Time) and Saturday 8-1. I would urge North American colleagues to seek out the site in the morning. There are some other excellent things there, for which Piero Falchetta deserves our general congratulation.
