1. News

1.1 GIS Day

GIS users and vendors are invited to join ESRI, the National Geographic Society, and the American Association of Geographers in opening their doors for the first annual GIS Day, to be held November 19, 1999. GIS Day is a global event. For more information see www.esri.com/gisday

1.2 US Geological Survey Workshops

The USGS has a series of training workshops on mapping, vegetation photo-interpretation. For more information about the workshops, visit the USGS site at www.nwrc.usgs.gov

1.3 New coding for form subdivisions now in effect

On February 17, 1999, Library of Congress started to use the new coding for form subdivisions ($v) in subject headings. OCLC's policy for current cataloging entered into WorldCat (the OCLC Online Union Catalog) is to follow LC practice. In other words, libraries entering new records that have form subdivisions should be using the new coding. If local systems can not handle the new $v, users should enter the information with the correct coding, add the record to WorldCat by doing the update command, and then edit the record for local practices.

Libraries entering records for retrospective conversion projects may continue to use the old coding if it is not clear that the subdivision represents a form or a topic. OCLC does not require that users change the older $x coding to $v when doing copy cataloging. Each library will need to decide at what rate they will adapt their existing catalogs. OCLC is investigating doing a conversion of older WorldCat records to the new coding practice; however, no schedule has been set for this project.

Guidelines in the online version of "Bibliographic Formats and Standards" will be updated to reflect this change. Specifically, restrictions in the 600, 610, 611, 630, 650 and 651 fields saying not to use the $v are no longer applicable. Corrections to the printed version will follow as part of the regular update cycle.

1.4 IFLA Section of Geography and Map Libraries

The Section is pleased to announce the nominations for the Standing Committee for the Section of Geography and Map Libraries for the 1999-2003 term, from the American Library Association and the Special Libraries Association.

Continuing in the 1997-2001 term:

Completing the 1995-1999 term:

These nominations will be confirmed and new Section Officers will be elected at the 1999 Bangkok meeting of the G&M Standing Committee (SC-I) on Saturday, August 21. Those elected will begin planning the 2000 Jerusalem meeting at the SC-II meeting on Friday, August 27 in Bangkok.

1.5 New Air Photo Retrieval System for Canada

National Resources Canada is testing a new Air Photo Retrieval System. Visit our site regularly for updated information at "http://airphotos.NRCan.gc.ca."

1.6 MAP/GIS LIBRARIAN at the University of Oregon

The University of Oregon Map and Aerial Photography (MAP) Library has one of the largest collections of geographic resources in the country and is used heavily by researchers on campus and within the Pacific Northwest. This The full text of this announcement is available at: http://libweb.uoregon.edu/admnpers/mapgis.html

1.7 Exploring GIS Data Certification

Many organizations have expressed interest in developing an 'official' or corporate GIS data set. Few, however, have realized such a product. One of the most common roadblocks to developing endorsed data sets is the issue of data certification. How does an organization, select, assess and endorse a corporate data set? What are the liabilities and benefits of data certification? As the NSDI Framework effort continues, reaching further into the data resources of state and local governments, issues of data certification loom.

The Louisiana Geographic Information Center (LAGIC) with support from the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) and the Louisiana Geographic Information Systems Council (LGISC) is exploring data certification. The objectives of the study are to identify the key technical and administrative issues surrounding data certification and to construct variable implementation strategies for addressing the issues.

Your participation is needed. A 'User Perceptions Survey' is posted at lagic.lsu.edu/survey.asp The survey consists of six short questions and is aimed at individual user perceptions and multiple respondents from the same organization are welcomed. At the end of the survey, participants are encouraged to join the program review committee by providing basis contact information.
