1.3 WAML Website honored as Key Resource

Links2Go selected the WAML Website at gort.ucsd.edu/mw/waml/waml.html as a "key resource" in the Map Libraries topic, at www.links2go.com/topic/Map_Libraries

Kudos to Linda Zellmer who has added content and reworked the pages in the last several months. And thanks to Larry Cruse at UC San Diego where the page resides.

1.4 Mps and GIS INFOMINE wins Mercator's World Award

"Maps and GIS INFOMINE" at lib-www.ucr.edu/search/ ucr_mapssearch.html" won a Mercator's World Magazine Web Award in March/April 1999. See other award winners at the magazine's site www.mercatormag.com.

Congratulations to the facilitators of the Maps & GIS INFOMINE site: WAML's own Wendie Helms at UC Riverside, Larry Cruse at UC San Diego and Mary Larsgaard, UC Santa Barbara.

The U.S. Geological Survey of the Department of the Interior is presenting a series of topical workshops pertaining to mapping, vegetation, photo-interpretation, remote sensing and Geographical Information Systems. The workshops are part of an effort to exchange information and provide access to spatial technologies developed at the center for natural resource survey. The workshops are available to the general public educators, state and federal agencies. For more information, check their Web site at www.nwrc.usgs.gov/training

The OpenGIS Consortium, with sponsorship by the FGDC, NASA, NIMA, and Army TEC, is coordinating a roughly six-month "Web Mapping Testbed" activity to evaluate and extend existing commercial and public mapping capabilities on the Web. The objectives of the testbed, as interpreted are 1) to evaluate existing methods for delivering raw raster and vector data, 2) examine possible conventions for interfaces between clients and map servers, and map servers and data servers, 3) incorporate OGC specifications such as Simple Features, Coverages, and Catalog Services into the activities, and 4) provide the basis for future OGC specifications on interoperable web mapping technology.

More information on the testbed can be accessed from the OpenGIS website: www.opengis.org under the WWW Mapping banner.

2.4.6 Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies

After weeks of work we are proud to announce the entire Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, is now available on the Art Source Web Site! The Official Records themselves were published by the War Records Office and subsequently by the Record and Pension Office over a span of several decades. The Atlas was published between 1891 and 1895 and is THE definitive source of Civil War information available. It consists of 175 plates, portraying a variety of information, from maps of individual battle sites to photographic views and uniforms and weaponry. There are also many broader-scale maps of regions, states, and the division of the country at various points during the war.

The atlas may be found by typing civil war in to our search engine at the top of any page. The atlas can also be searched by location, battle, and or plate number. Available at www.mapsandprints.com
