1.1 LCCS Numbers for Nunavat

The Library of Congress has approved the following atlas and map classification numbers for Nunavut.

The National Archives of Canada will be reclassing their material in the near future.

1.2 Report Online from the Workshop on Geolibraries

This report was just made available on the web. It is a summary of a workshop on Geolibraries which was organized last year in Washington, by the Mapping Science Committee of the National Academy of Science. The URL for the report is: www.nap.edu/html/geolibraries/.

1.3 Victor Wiebe takes over maps at the University of Saskatchewan

Victor Wiebe, reference librarian in Government Publications, Maps & Microforms at the University of Saskatchewan Libraries, has assumed direct responsibility for maps and atlases in our collections.

Victor has been with the U of S for some 23 years -- I know, because he started only a couple of months before I did -- and has served the libraries in a variety of functions over the years, including reference librarian in the Reference Department, reference librarian in Health Sciences, and Head of Reference.

2.4.3 Landsat 7 - Landsat 7 was launched successfully from Vandenberg Air Force Base at 11:32am (PDT), Thursday, April 15, 1999. Visit http://landsat7.usgs.gov/ the USGS's new Landsat 7 website. It includes information about the satellite, its mission, data and products.

2.4.4 USGS Topographic Symbols Online - The USGS topo symbols are available online via Wide World of Maps Website. Visit the "Mapping Reference Guide" at http://www.maps4u.com/default_frame.htm.

2.4.5 Online Arizona Topo Index & Catalog - Website Offers Complete Map Coverage -- Buying USGS topographic maps of Arizona is a breeze with the On-Line Arizona Topo Index & Catalog. Visit the Wide World of Maps website at www.maps4u.com.

2.4.6 USGS' Geologic Division online map database

The Geologic Division of the USGS is currently building a National Geologic Map database which is available on the Web: ngmdb.usgs.gov. This is a searchable catalog of paper and digital geologic maps. It can be searched by geologic theme, geographic area, author, title and map number. When complete, the database will contain information about geologic maps produced by the USGS as well as by other Federal agencies, tribal governments, State geological surveys, local governments, academic institutions, and the private sector.

2.4.9 Spatial Effects Web Site

Spatial Effects is pleased to announce the launch of its web site at www.spatial-effects.com/. While this is a "dot-com" enterprise, the site is primarily devoted to discussing issues and approaches concerning understanding, encoding, modeling and visualizing geodata. Spatial Effects does not sell software or data; it is a consulting practice focused on helping clients maximize returns on investments in digital geospatial data, founded fifteen years ago by Dr. Geoffrey Dutton, a pioneer in numerical cartography, spatial data modeling and visualization, and geographic and geodata applications.

2.4.11 NIMA Online Catalog

The USGS is the distributor of public sale National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) topographic maps, publications, and digital products. A catalog of NIMA maps and products is now available online. This is a revised version of the Defense Mapping Agency catalog which was last printed in 1996. 2.4.12 The Serious Collector Web Site

2.4.13 MAGERT's Metadata Primer for Map Librarians Available Online

The MAGERT "Metadata Primer for Map Librarians" has been updated to reflect new developments in this fast moving field. A link has been added to the OCLC CORC Project, which displays records in both MARC and Dublin Core formats. Graduate students from any field who will benefit from in-depth study of the political and ethical dimensions of the relationship between mapping and community definition are encouraged to apply for admission to the seminar.
