1. News

1.1.

Chosen from more than 60,000 organizations worldwide, the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) was recognized for its accomplishments in geographic information system (GIS) technology. The Special Achievement in GIS award was presented by ESRI, during their annual conference in San Diego. 

The Special Achievement award honors an elite group of organizations that have embraced GIS technology to better serve the world.

Stanford Geological Survey Maps and Field Notebooks to be Digitized

Branner Earth Sciences Library & Map Collections, of the Stanford University Libraries, is pleased to announce the receipt of a grant through the California State Library to scan and catalog the maps and field notebooks of the Stanford Geological Survey from 1897 to the present.  This two year project will be funded jointly by funds from the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), the School of Earth Sciences at Stanford, and the Stanford University Libraries.  

The collection includes approximately 5,000 manuscript items that primarily cover portions of the state of California.  As the maps and field notebooks are held exclusively at Branner Library, they are a unique resource for the people of the state of California and across the county.  The scanned maps and field notebooks, as well as the accompanying metadata, will ultimately be available to all for free over the Web.  Although it is expected that the project will take two years to complete, the Web site will be fully functional after the first year with a goal of 500 images and records available to view.

Interested In Serving on Depository Library Council? 

The Depository Library Council (DLC) is an advisory board to the Public Printer of the United States, providing advice on policy matters related to the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) as provided in Title 44 of the United States Code. The primary focus of Council's work is to advise the Public Printer, the Superintendent of Documents, and appropriate members of Government Printing Office (GPO) staff on the management and operation of the FDLP.

Reference Librarian/Government Documents/Maps Librarian

 (Search Reopened). Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Provides reference and information services to library users at the RIS Desk, in the Scholars Information Center, and on the department's electronic reference lists, on rotating weekday and weekend schedules. May be required to work weeknights.

 Specific duties include assisting users in finding appropriate information sources: searching computerized databases and teaching database searching and research techniques, both one-on-one and in the classroom. Makes recommendations for the acquisition/selection and withdrawal/deselection of reference materials. Serves on departmental and libraries/university-wide task forces and committees. Manages the federal and Pennsylvania depository and map collections, within established depository and Temple University Libraries guidelines; makes recommendations for the purchase of other materials that support and enhance the use of depository materials and map resources. Oversees the acquisition of materials from Federal, Pennsylvania, and intergovernmental agencies and organizations for all libraries and departments of Temple University Libraries. Organizes, maintains, and ensures access to government documents and maps through bibliographic control and other means. Trains departmental staff in the use of government documents and maps. Directly or indirectly supervises the Government Documents/Map Unit's full-time and student employees. Collects, maintains, and analyzes statistics on expenditures and the use and growth of depository and map collections.

 Qualifications: MLS from an ALA-accredited institution. Must have a broad background in the social sciences or the liberal arts. Must possess well-developed interpersonal skills and good writing skills. Experience with microcomputers is required. Must have coursework or experience in reference and database searching. Master's degree in a social science, coursework, or experience in user education and government documents/maps preferred.

 Compensation: Minimum $33,000; higher commensurate with qualifications and experience. Librarians are periodically subject to administrative and peer review for merit increases based on the following criteria: 1) outstanding performance as related to the Librarian's position description; 2) outstanding contributions or service to the profession of librarianship; 3) outstanding service to the libraries, academic departments, colleges, school, or the university; 4) outstanding special achievements.

 Generous benefits package includes health, dental, and life insurance; tuition remission; and TIAA-CREF retirement plans. GIS/Map Librarian - St. Lawrence University - New York

St. Lawrence University invites applications and nominations for a GIS Specialist to provide expertise and leadership in expanding and promoting GIS services and coordinating the libraries' map collections. This is a full-time appointment. Salary from the high-30's, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Search reopened.

 The GIS Specialist will work with faculty and students in classrooms and in the library's GIS computer lab, offering instruction and assistance with spatial analysis and applications of geospatial data, and contributing to related curriculum development.

 Reporting to the University Librarian, the GIS Specialist will work closely with faculty associated with the University's Integrated Science Education Initiative (ISEI) and with the GIS/GPS Science Instrumentation Technician. A principal component of GIS services at St. Lawrence University is the development of a Natural History Database of georeferenced spatial data for a 76-acre preserve adjacent to campus. The GIS/Map Librarian will oversee the planning, design, and implementation of the Natural History Database; maintain quality control of data and metadata; and ensure ongoing and archival access to data via the campus network. In addition, the GIS Specialist will coordinate the overall selection and organization of the libraries' geospatial data collections.

As a member of the Library professional staff, the GIS Specialist will also participate in the planning and provision of GIS-related reference and public service activities in Launders Science Library. The GIS Specialist will be a member of the Libraries' Systems Team, a GIS liaison with the Information Technology Department, and a participant in campus committee work.

 Applicants must have a master's degree in an appropriate subject field. An ALA accredited MLS is preferred. Two years academic or work experience with geospatial and numeric data resources; demonstrated commitment to patron service; excellent communication skills; ability to excel in an instructional setting; demonstrated ability to provide leadership in project management; high degree of computer literacy and interest in new technologies and their applications in academic libraries; demonstrated familiarity with geospatial software such as ArcView, ARC/INFO, ERDAS or Idrisi.

Cataloging/technical services librarian is sought by West Chester University of Pennsylvania Library to begin no later than spring semester, 2002.

 Will be responsible for the cataloging and classification of curriculum materials, children's books, media, special collections materials, electronic resources, and maps. Will also supervise support personnel. Shared responsibilities with Print Cataloger include the online system (Voyager), OCLC maintenance, authority work, budgeting, and applying departmental policy.

 This is a tenure-track faculty position, 9-month appointment, with additional summer work available. Tenure and promotion involve faculty standards for scholarship, professional growth, and service. Requirements: ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS or its equivalent, three years cataloging experience, proficiency in AACR2r, Dewey/Cutter, LCSH, MARC, and OCLC. Working knowledge of LCC. Experience with library automation, microcomputer applications, and the Internet. The ability to communicate and work effectively with faculty and staff. Applicant must successfully complete an on site visit. Preferred qualifications: Working knowledge of Endeavor Library Systems, CORC, and Dublin Core. Experience in academic or special libraries. 2nd Master's degree.

Description: The Reference Department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a highly qualified and experienced librarian to provide innovative and energetic leadership in the newly created position of GIS Services Librarian.

•  The librarian will develop and implement GIS services and resources, working closely with students, faculty, and staff on campus. Reporting directly to the Head of the Reference Department, the GIS Services Librarian will assist users with GIS projects and analyze users' spatial data needs and locate and deliver data in appropriate formats.
•  The librarian will be responsible for collection development for GIS spatial data and the collection and development of metadata related to the library's holdings. The GIS Services Librarian will serve on the Reference Department Data Team and will work together with the Electronic Documents/Data Librarian and other departmental and library staff to evaluate spatial and numeric data resources and services.
•  The librarian will coordinate the library's GIS services with other campus GIS initiatives and cooperate with neighboring Triangle university GIS initiatives.
•  The librarian will train library staff in the use of GIS and spatial data resources and will serve at the reference desk and work some nights and weekends.

 The Reference Department of the Academic Affairs Library is responsible for providing reference service to the students, faculty, and staff of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as well as providing the service to citizens of the State of North Carolina. Reference services cover humanities, social sciences, business and economics, and government information. The Library serves as a Regional Depository for federal information and also collects state documents, United Nations, and other international agency information and is responsible for the library's microform collection.

 Qualifications: Required: ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library Science, Information Science or an advanced degree in a discipline with an emphasis on spatial data. Work experience with or academic background in geospatial data and numeric data resources. Experience with geospatial processing software (ArcView, ArcInfo, MapInfo, ERDAS Imagine, ERMapper, Landview). Good understanding of/and experience with computer systems (DOS, UNIX, Windows NT). Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively. Ability to work well with others in a team environment. Good teaching and communication skills and a strong commitment to public service. Preferred: Work experience in an academic research library. Familiarity with current issues and technologies related to spatial data. Demonstrated ability to provide effective access to sources of cartographic and other spatial and geographic information sources.
