1. NEWS

1.1 UC Berkeley Library completes map conversion

In July, the Library of the University of California, Berkeley, completed the conversion of its map catalog records. This is believed to be the largest map collection to have completed a retrospective conversion project, and only the second one in North America to do so. Some 33,000 records were converted during the period from 1980-1997. Of these, all but 9,600 now appear not only in UCBs online catalogs and in the California-wide MELVYL catalog, but also in RLIN and OCLC. The maps are from Berkeleys Earth Sciences and Map, Bancroft, Bioscience and Natural Resources, and East Asian libraries. The major beneficiaries are users of the Berkeley map collections, who can now find references to all maps online, rather than having to go to individual card catalogs.

A variety of strategies were used to complete the project. Grants from the U.S. Department of Education aided in the cataloging or conversion of maps of California (this project also included maps in the Water Resources Center Archive). School of Library and Information Studies student interns completed conversion for small countries such as Nepal, New Zealand and Nicaragua. Staff from the Earth Sciences and Map, Bancroft, and East Asian libraries did most of the work. Some records were converted by OCLC -- unfortunately most catalog cards representing the Librarys maps were sub-standard and highly idiosyncratic and not thus amenable to straightforward conversion.

Copy was found for about 20 percent of the titles. The rest were in most cases given original cataloging using the existing catalog record as a starting point. Most maps had to be reclassified from the UCB map classification system to the Library of Congresss G schedule. The grant-funded records for California were full MARC records; others were a combination of brief and full. Although records now appear in the UC Berkeley's online catalogs, the task is not yet completely finished. About 9,600 records need to be upgraded before they can be exported to the utilities. These are records for which no copy was found and which were converted from old, substandard catalog records without the piece in hand. This process will likely take several years.

The individuals who participated in the multi-year project included Randal Brandt, John Creaser, Leigh Donley, Berta Duenas, Claire Englander, Karen Grief, Fleur Helsingor, Phil Hoehn, Timothy Hoyer, Arthur Miyazaki, Mamiko Nakamura, Donald Shively, Susan Rosenblatt, Vivienne Roumani-Denn, Anne Terrell, Fatemah Van Buren, and Michael Yockey.

1.2 Rand McNally Sold to AEA Investors

The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that the Rand McNally company is being sold to AEA Investors Inc. The McNally family will become minority shareholders in the company and will not be involved in the management of the firm. The new president and CEO is Henry Feinberg. 1.3 1998 J. B Harley Research Fellowships available

Applications for the 1998 Fellowships are invited from anyone pursuing advanced research in the history of cartography, irrespective of nationality, discipline or profession. 'Advanced research' is taken to mean work towards a doctorate, post-doctoral research, and work of an equivalent level regardless of the applicant's formal qualifications. Preference will be given to interpretative studies in map history, irrespective of area, theme or period. The closing date for applications was November 1, 1997.

1.4 Quake Center To Leave Bay Area, U.S. Geological Survey to seek cheaper home

The U.S. Geological Survey's regional headquarters in Menlo Park, site of the nation's leading earthquake research center, has been ordered by Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt to abandon its 16-acre campus and move to smaller, cheaper quarters outside the Bay Area. In a major budget-paring effort, the survey's regional director, Thomas J. Casadevall, unexpectedly was told to complete a preliminary relocation plan within a month.

That could force the transfer of up to 810 federal jobs out of the Bay Area. In addition, many scientists worry that the move could disrupt their efforts to monitor and predict earthquakes. The order came without warning last Friday, officials said.

The Menlo Park center's two principal buildings, which house all the survey's earthquake monitoring equipment as well as its unequaled seismology research laboratory, are leased from private owners and must be vacated within a year, according to a memorandum from Gordon Eaton, national director of the federal agency. Eaton's memo does not set a deadline for moving the rest of the Menlo Park center's activities, but they are expected to follow quickly.

2.4.1 Current Geographical Publications - The September 1997 issue of Current Geographical Publications is now available at http://leardo.lib.uwm.edu/cgp.
2.4.2 Texas maps now available from the Texas State Library and Archives - The Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) is pleased to announce that high-resolution scanned images from its Map Archive are now available online at the Archives and Information Services Lobby area of the TSLAC web site. The complete list of scanned maps can be found at http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/lobby/maps/. Approximately 20 maps -- dating from 1720 to 1822 -- are presently available at the web site, with the number of scanned images expected to increase weekly. These historic maps have been carefully scanned on a high-resolution drum scanner to a resolution of 250 dots per inch. Although the map images have been digitally manipulated to optimize contrast and readability, no details have been added or reconstructed. For most maps, the image size and color palette have been slightly reduced to minimize the final file size, while maintaining a level of detail necessary to preserve all printed lines and notations.

The Western Association of Map Libraries will celebrate its thirtieth anniversary this September, when it convenes for its Fall 1997 meeting in Pasadena. Hosted by the California Institute of Technology, the program will include presentations on a range of topics, historical to technological. Besides the program and business meetings, there will be a celebratory banquet, a picnic lunch, and a field trip. All meetings will be held on the Caltech campus, and the field trip will be in downtown Los Angeles.
