3.1. WAML Spring Meeting Registration
The David Rumsey Collection announces a new GIS Browser available online at www.davidrumsey.com. The GIS Browser allows integration and interaction of historical maps with current geospatial data and other historical maps.
The current geospatial data that can be overlaid and compared to the historical maps includes roads, lakes, parks, state boundaries, digital orthophotos (aerial photography), topographic mapsheets, digital elevation models and satellite imagery. The GIS Browser is available in two versions on the site, a GIS Basic Browser for those new to GIS and a GIS Professional Browser for those familiar with GIS conventions.
Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC) records are being created for online maps and other images in the David Rumsey Collection. These records are available in OCLC and RLIN, as well as in the University of California, Berkeley's Pathfinder Catalog, and in the University of California's Melvyl Catalog. All can be retrieved by a corporate name search on David Rumsey Collection. The cataloging is provided by a joint project of the Rumsey Collection and the Earth Sciences and Map Library at UC Berkeley.
Checklists of titles cataloged, giving Library of Congress Geographic Classification Code, Subject Code, Brief Title, Author and OCLC number, will be prepared periodically. Stanley D. Stevens, Founding President of WAML and Honorary Life Member, who is Map Librarian Emeritus at the University of California, Santa Cruz, was honored in November by the History Forum of the Museum of Art and History as the "Historian of the Year, 2001".
His current work is an extension of collection development during his years as Map Librarian at UCSC, 1965-1993. He has created and continues to work everyday as a volunteer Coordinator of the Hihn-Younger Archive at the University Library's Special Collections, and the UCSC Map Room.

Linda Zellmer, WAML Editor, Moves East
After 15 years west of the 100th Meridian, Linda Zellmer is moving East. On January 14, 2002, She will start as Head of the Geology Library at Indiana University (Bloomington). The position offers her the opportunity to continue to work with GIS, and the possibility of sharing her knowledge and experience related to GIS in Libraries with others, specifically with students in the IU Library School. The Lunar and Planetary Institute plans to produce a CD_ROM version of the Consolidated Lunar Atlas soon. Library Lecturer III - University of New Mexico

Academic Research Library Internship, UNM General Library Responsible to:
Director of Zimmerman Library. Salary range: $30,000 to $34,000 for a 12-month
period
Position Description: Two positions are available. These Internships are designed for recent graduates of an ALA accredited library and information science program. Interns will be provided opportunities to develop expertise in a variety of public service functions, instruction, Web-based services, and library technology, in a large ARL academic library. Appointments are 12-month non-tenure track positions at the lecturer III level, renewable annually for up to two additional years. Renewal is subject to program needs, library budget, and job performance. Interns will participate in faculty governance as detailed in the UNM Faculty Handbook (see: http://www.unm.edu/~facsen/fhb.htm).
Duties: Public Service functions with emphasis on general reference provision and instruction. Assist with the development of Web-based services, e.g. subject pages, finding guides, and online tutorials. Participate in library technology problem solving and library information technology discussions and applications. Assist in the management of the electronic classrooms. May, depending on interest or need, be involved in collection development activities, the identification and evaluation of new public service and library technology programs, pilot projects, user surveys and distance education activities. May assist with outreach programs.
Requirements: Graduate degree from an ALA accredited program in library and information science between May 2000 and June 2002, including coursework in public services, library instruction and electronic resources. Proven computer skills and training. Communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated commitment to public services, information literacy, and outreach activities. Desired: Library instruction or teaching experience. Reference or library information desk experience. Experience in Web-based or other electronic multimedia teaching environments. Evidence of professional development, (e.g. attendance at library related conferences). Proven ability to work in a highly electronic environment. Evidence of high motivation and creativity.

Research Associate II in Natural Sciences - Univ. of Michigan at Ann Arbor
The School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor invites applicants for the position of Research Associate II in Natural Science. The School seeks an individual to lead the development, maintenance and support of a "Digital Water Atlas for Michigan's Inland Waters, to allow for the storage, retrieval and synthesis of multi-scale information on Michigan's inland lakes and streams. This individual will help develop and deploy geographic information system (GIS) decision-support applications, including ecological classification systems, to support fisheries biologists and other natural resource managers in Michigan. The position is located at the Institute for Fisheries Research www.dnr.state.mi.us/www/ifr/ifrhome/, on the central campus of the University of Michigan www.umich.edu/, in Ann Arbor www.ci.ann-arbor.mi.us/.
Typical duties and responsibilities include the following: develop and maintain aquatic (and related) base maps and links to statewide databases; develop project work plans; perform GIS analyses using ArcView, ARC/INFO and related software; assist in developing spatially explicit ecological and hydrological models; coordinate "Atlas" activities with the community of GIS users among natural resource managers; maintain databases, equipment, software upgrades, and advise on future needs; supervise production, maintenance, and distribution of products to resource managers, especially fisheries biologists in the Fisheries Division of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The individual will also prepare metadata and user guides and provide formal and informal training on system use; and respond to requests from users for technical information regarding GIS operations.
Minimum requirements include: the academic knowledge of a natural resource area, plus the ability to translate, adapt, and apply this knowledge that is generally associated with a Master's degree in an environmentally related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience, plus two or more years of experience in the application of GIS to landscape-scale problems in natural resources; knowledge of DOS, UNIX, and Windows NT operating systems; experience and expertise in computer programming and GIS database management in both UNIX and PC environments; specific knowledge of a range of GIS applications, including ArcView, ARC/INFO, and ERDAS Imagine or other image analysis software; and proficiency with internet operations (ftp, telnet, Netscape/Explorer) and networked environments.

Description Of Unit: The Young Research Library (YRL) Reference and Instructional Services (RIS) department provides reference, instructional, and outreach services to upper division undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty in social sciences, humanities, and the schools of Graduate Education and Information Studies and Public Policy and Social Research. RIS has collection development responsibilities for a multilingual, research-level collection of reference, government, and cartographic materials in various formats (ca. 84,000 volumes, 4,400 serials, 500,000 maps, over 2 million microfiche, and 800 CD-ROMS). RIS is a depository for numerous local, state, national, and international government documents and for official publications issued by a wide variety of other governmental agencies and intergovernmental organizations. In addition, RIS maintains a unique collection of materials from non-governmental, public affairs-related organizations and campaign literature. The Geographic Information System (GIS) Resource Center is located in the department. The RIS staff includes 9.35 FTE librarians, 7 FTE staff, and an administrative assistant. Duties: Under the general direction of the Associate University Librarian for Public Services, the head of YRL-RIS provides leadership for, and management of, the programs, services, operations, staff, and budget of the department. With organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, leads and supports staff in the evaluation and analytical assessment of ongoing services and programs for effectiveness and implements improvements as appropriate. Promotes teamwork, cooperative and professional intra- and inter-departmental relationships, and visibility for the department, its services and programs. Develops strategic directions and vision for RIS, including user input/feedback and needs assessment data; plans, monitors, and adjusts budgetary resources and staffing configurations and assignments to achieve priority goals and objectives. Keeps abreast of peer institutions' best practices and advanced trends in organizing and providing reference and research assistance and instruction; has a conceptual approach to the changing role of the reference librarian; and is informed about upper division undergraduate and graduate education, faculty teaching and research, digital libraries, and scholarly communication. Some participation in reference service, instruction, and collection development activities. Is active in own professional development and supports others in their continuous learning. Participates in administrative and policy level groups and advisory committees.
Qualifications: Required: A record of excellent managerial, planning, organizational, leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills and experience in an academic or research library. Substantial and progressively responsible experience with planning, budgeting, and personnel management. A record of accomplishments that reflect, for example, abilities to introduce and manage change, innovation or new technologies; or, evaluate and assess ongoing services in response to user needs. Experience in providing academic or research level public services (reference, instruction, outreach). Experience in some combination of the following collection development areas, i.e., social sciences, humanities, government documents, or cartography. Should have strong user-centered service philosophy and enthusiasm for serving graduate students and faculty as well as the ability to cooperate and coordinate departmental activities with other public service units. Must be knowledgeable of academic library trends, philosophies, and best practices. Desirable: Experience in a large university research library. Experience with space planning, library building renovation projects, or organizational change such as department mergers and collection consolidations. Interest in data gathering techniques, user input/feedback methodologies, and analysis of focus groups, surveys, web-based questionnaires, etc. Familiarity with digital project management or development of web content and redesign.
