1.1 A New use for aerial photography from the Phoenix Gazette

    

The Phoenix Gazette (12/20/96, p.E2) reports "Clients and associates of

Nathan & Associates will find a nice - and valuable - surprise on the back

of the real estate brokerage's poster size Christmas card."  It's an aerial

map showing major real-estate developments in the Salt River Valley.  The

firm has projects in several of them.  The maps were made by Landiscor,

which usually sells them.

LIBCAL is a new listserv mailing list established to inform members of the

Library and Information Science community of conferences, workshops, etc

which may be of interest to them for furthering their professional

3. Meetings and other educational opportunities

    

    

3.1  International Miami Map Fair, Miami, FL, 1 - 2 February, 1997.

In addition to the sale of maps by dealers, the Map Fair will include a

series of lectures and workshops for participants, designed to educate and

inform them about map collecting.  The 1997 Map Fair will include a

keynote lecture by Dr. Seymour Schwartz of Rochester, New York, co-author

of _The Mapping of America_. Alice Hudson, Chief of the Map Division, The

research Library of The New York Public Library will lead one of the

workshops. Dealer Michael Slicker will also participate in a panel

discussion on "What to Look for When Buying an Antique Map."

The University Consortium for Geographic Information Science will hold its

1997 Summer Assembly in Bar Harbor, Maine from June 15 to June 21.  Two

primary goals of the meeting are to:

    

1. disseminate advanced knowledge on geographic information science and

technology topics among leading researchers, professors, and graduate

students in the field, and

2. identify the nation's highest priority education needs for advancing

geographic information science and develop initiatives to respond to those

needs.
