This includes technical services and public services functions as well as collection development and management in the areas of maps and geography. For more information about Michigan State University Libraries, visit our website at http://www.lib.msu.edu/.

1.4 FGDC WebEvent Metadata Training Calendar - To check on metadata training opportunities near you, look at the FGDC WebEvent Metadata Training Calendar. The site is located at http://www.fgdc.gov/cgi-bin/people/META/WebEvent/WebEvent.

1.5 New pricing for USGS National Park maps

The U.S. Geological Survey will implement a new price for all USGS National Park maps on December 6, 1999. All USGS National Park maps whether folded or flat, printed on paper or plastic will be the same price. The new price for all USGS National Park maps will be $7.00 per sheet, plus a $5.00 handling charge per order. An online list of USGS National Park maps and an online order form are available at http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/products/mappubs.html.

1.6 Mapping Europe's historic boundaries and borders

The European Science Foundation has awarded FF 100,000 (about Pnds 9600 or $US 15400) to support an "exploratory workshop in the humanities" on historic boundary mapping. The workshop will be held at the European University Institute in Florence on June 1st-3rd 2000.

1.7 USGS Business Partners brochure

The USGS has published a full color, folded brochure which shows the variety of published maps and posters available to USGS Business Partners (map dealers). It was designed as a marketing tool for Business Partners and will be distributed to them for use in selling USGS products. In addition to maps, the brochure also shows a few examples of products available through the digital cartographic data and the aerial photography product lines of the Business Partner Program. When fully opened the brochure becomes a 24" X 27" poster.

The brochure, titled "Discover the many types of maps available from the U.S. Geological Survey," is intended for distribution by Business Partners and will not be available for distribution through the USGS ESIC's. State ESIC's that are also Business Partners will receive copies automatically; other State ESIC's can request a few copies of the brochure for office use if desired from USGS Information Services, Box 25286, Denver, CO 80225 (FAX: 303-202-4693). The FFS file number is 67-PB1.

1.8 Map-On-Demand Printing from the USGS

Using print-on-demand technology, the USGS is implementing map-on-demand (MOD) printing for selected, infrequently requested map products. With the advent of newer technologies, high-speed, large-format printers have been coupled with innovative computer technologies to turn digital map data into a printed map. It is now possible to store and retrieve data from large geospatial data bases and to print a map when needed, thereby eliminating the need to warehouse a paper inventory of products for which there is low demand.

The paper and inks used in the MOD process are not as durable as those used in traditional USGS lithographic products. Although the inks are ultraviolet resistant, they are not water stable. These products must be protected from high humidity and wet conditions and from prolonged and consistent exposure to the sun and other radiation sources. The MOD maps can be written on with either ink or pencil with no smudging and they can be heat laminated with no "bleeding" of colors.

To view the MOD products currently available or obtain an order form for MOD products, please visit the MOD Web site at http://rockyweb.cr.usgs.gov/mod.

1.9 Library Programs Service sending shipping lists to all libraries

As of October 1, 1999, the Library Programs Service (LPS) is distributing USGS map shipping lists to all depository libraries, whether or not they select the maps. Libraries that do select the USGS maps will continue to receive shipping lists from USGS, as well as from LPS.

1.10 GIS & Map Librarian position at Stanford University - Stanford's Branner Earth Sciences Library and Map Collections has a open position for a GIS & Map Librarian. For more information, please check the site at http://www-sul.stanford.edu/depts/humres/65.html.

Next telecon will be in three months (March timeframe).

2.4.7 Penn State Map Library's new web address

The Penn State Maps Library has a new homepage address. It is http://www.libraries.psu.edu/crsweb/maps. Additionally, the Penn State Digital Chart of the World site has been rated as a Top Ten pick on the Ten Links site. To access it or the other GIS sites go to: www.tenlinks.com/MapGIS/data.htm. Then choose #7 - Digital Chart of the World Data Server.

2.4.8 TopoZone - http://www.topozone.com/

You can find maps here for almost two million outdoor places throughout the United States -- from Kauai's Waialeale, one of the world's wettest places, to Death Valley's Furnace Creek, a low-lying hot spot, to Alaska's Denali, North America's highest mountain. Maps a la carte, Inc. worked with the U.S. Geological Survey to create easy web access to the USGS collection of topographic maps "that don't leave big blank spaces between the highways." This is a resource that geographers, outdoor explorers, and anyone who loves cartography will want to bookmark.

Second Iinternational Symposium on Telegeoprocessing, Nice-Sophia -Antipolis, France, 10 - 12 May, 2000

Scope of the conference: This conference aims at bringing together all people carrying out research in novel systems in telegeoprocessing, cross-fertilization between Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Telecommunications. Telegeoprocessing can be defined as a new discipline based on real time spatial databases updated regularly by means of telecommunications systems in order to support online decision-making. Overall attention will be given to systems based on Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and all other technologies for sending data from sensors to GIS systems by means of wireless communications. For more information, see http://www.insa-lyon.fr/Labos/LISI/telegeo/.

Historical GIS Workshop: Mapping Europe's Boundaries and Borders, Florence, Italy, June 2000. For more information, see the site http://www.esf.org/hp/call99.htm.

IASSIST 2000 Data in the Digital Library: social, spatial, and government data services, Evanston, Illinois at Northwestern University, 7 - 10 June 2000.

IASSIST conferences bring together data professionals, data producers, and data analysts from around the world who are engaged in the creation, acquisition, processing, maintenance, distribution, preservation, and use of numeric social science data for research and instruction.

National Conference on GIS in Education, California State University, San Bernardino, 15 - 19 July 2000.

To meet the needs of educators and administrators, the California State University, San Bernardino Colleges of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Education, and Extended Learning are pleased to collaborate with Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) to offer this conference. The conference promises to be the premier GIS/education event in the nation, and is the first of its kind.
