- WAML Member Paige Andrew to Receive Nancy B. Olson Award
The Online Audiovisual Catalogers (OLAC) Awards Committee, have selected Paige Andrew to receive the 2009 Nancy B. Olson Award. The Committee chose Paige based on his considerable achievements in furthering the goals of standardization of map cataloging, including MARC coding and tagging and promoting the understanding of map cataloging and data exchange by professionals unfamiliar with these materials and process.
The award will be presented to Paige at the OLAC membership meeting in July during the ALA Annual Conference:
* For making substantial contributions to audiovisual and map cataloging
* For his various publications on map cataloging
* For presenting quality cataloging workshops at OLAC Conferences and other local, state, regional, and national conferences
* For his work in and for OLAC and various national and regional organizations and committees
* For his willingness to share his knowledge with other librarians

- Something fun: a new work of fiction with the New York Public Library and antique maps as main characters. From a bookstore newsletter: Lethal Legacy by Linda Fairstein (Doubleday) taps into wonderful stuff: the collections of the New York Public Library and its history, old NY families, antique maps, and the craziness of collectors. She's really done her homework on the history of mapmaking and makes you long to own one these beautiful documents yourself. DA Alex Cooper, detectives Mike and Mercer, and library staff face off against at least one murderous collector of antique maps and chase suspects all over town. Not even a pocket cemetery is exempt. As a walk through Manhattan history and the dysfunctional wealthy, with a nod to John Dunning's classic biblio-mysteries, this is a winner on all fronts.

WAML News
- Courtesy of Ken Rockwell, the WAML Spring Meeting website is now available. The meeting will take place April 29-May 2 at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City. The Education Committee is planning to have a workshop on Thursday morning, April 30th, and is looking for presenters. The workshop topic will be the effective use of map web sites and viewers in answering reference questions. They are planning to show 4-5 sites/viewers, giving people information about what's on the site, how to download information, where to get metadata, etc. Examples would be portals such as the USGS seamless site, the Census site for creating maps, Landsat imagery sites, etc. Please contact Julie Sweetkind-Singer if you interested in presenting.

- WAML members presented a Practical Map Librarian Workshop at the North American Cartographic Information Society’s (NACIS) 28th annual meeting, held in Missoula, MT, October 8-11, 2008. Paige Andrew, Penn St. University, spoke on “Future Directions for NACIS and Map Librarianship.” Jon Jablonski, University of Oregon, presented “Issues in Digital Cartographic Collections” with Edith Scarletto from Kent St. University.

- The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) will be implementing a new price structure for various map products, effective March 1, 2009:
The price for the USGS Primary Series topographic quadrangle maps (7.5 minute - 1:24,000, 1:25,000, 1:20,000 scales; 7.5 x 15 minute - 1:25,000 scale; Alaska 1:63,360 scale) will increase from $6 to $8 per sheet. The price for most other USGS map titles and scales (including 1:100,000-scale series, 1:250,000-scale series and smaller scale topographic maps as well as thematic maps) will increase from $7 to $9 per sheet. The price for National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) maps will increase from $10 to $12 per sheet. Prices for select large format maps will vary by size. Geologic quadrangles and thematic map prices will vary from $9 to $80 per title depending on the number of sheets and/or whether the product is produced using the print-on-demand process. Print-on-demand thematic products will be priced at $5/sq. ft.

- From an announcement by editor Mike Smith (not me!) of the online Journal of Maps: the journal has entered into a content licensing relationship with EBSCO Publishing, the world's most prolific aggregator of full text journals, magazines and other sources. Keyword search databases enable the user to retrieve items at the article or chapter level. The full text of the Journal of Maps will soon be available through EBSCO Publishing's databases. This is a significant step forward in the development of the journal as it identifies the international importance of the articles we publish. Inclusion in EBSCOs full text keyword databases will increase the exposure of articles to a large number of researchers at institutions around the world.
Also, The Journal of Maps’ application has been accepted for inclusion in the following Thomson Reuters products beginning with volume 1, 2005: Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE), including the Web of Science ISI Alerting Service Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) Current Contents/Physical and Chemical & Earth Sciences (CC/PC&ES) Current Contents/Social & Behavioral Sciences. Indexing is scheduled for later in 2009. This development further establishes the journal internationally, increasing exposure to researchers across the world. For organizations that require citation listing, authors will now be able to submit manuscripts for publication.
- From a recent email from the NOAA Acting Administrator William Brennan:
“I would like to congratulate Juliana P. Blackwell who was named the new director of the NOS Office of National Geodetic Survey. NGS is the oldest federal science agency, established by President Thomas Jefferson in 1807 as the Survey of the Coast. Ms. Blackwell has a wealth of experience including 16 years at the Survey and earlier service as a NOAA Corps officer including work on hydrographic survey operations.
Ms. Blackwell will be the first woman to head the Survey in its 200-year history.”

- David Rumsey will also be speaking at the ALA Annual Meeting in Chicago on Saturday, July 11th (1:30-3:30) on “Giving Maps a Second Life with Digital Technologies.” Another MAGERT-sponsored program will be “Maps as a Research Focus in Librarianship: Examples from the Field,” with speakers Paige Andrew (Penn St.) and Chris Kollen (Univ. of Arizona) on Monday, July 13th (1:30-3:30). Canadian News
- See ACMLA for information on their 2009 Conference, to be held in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, June 9-11. Call for papers are due March 15th. The 2010 conference will held at a university in Ontario; the meeting location and dates are to be determined. The 2011 conference will be at the Univ. of British Columbia, Vancouver, from May 17-20. Host is Tim Ross, and will be held in conjunction with WAML.

New Maps & Web Sites of Interest
- From the University of Minnesota: The John R. Borchert Map Library has announced the release of MHAPO - Minnesota Historical Aerial Photographs Online.
MHAPO provides access to over 7700 digitized copies of historic photos covering the Twin Cities metro area. MHAPO uses a Google mashup interface with push pins indicating the center point of each photo. Clicking on a push pin provides additional information about the photo including a link to view the photo.
Also in development is MapHappy, which provides users with a new way to search for maps at the University of Minnesota Libraries. MapHappy is another Google mashup interface that utilizes existing data from the OPAC to provide a geographic interface for
looking at search results.
- A fantastic new website, AfricaMap, hosted at Harvard University, recently debuted. The site currently has 50 mappable layers for African data.
- From the University of Virginia, an online exhibit of a recent exhibition: On the Map: Dr. Seymour I. Schwartz Collection of North American Maps, 1500-1800.
- The Washington Post has their own new interactive map called TimeSpace, “that allows you to navigate articles, photos, video and commentary from around the globe. Discover news hot-spots where coverage is clustered. Use the timeline to illustrate peaks in coverage, and customize your news searches to a particular day or specific hour.”
- A new online wiki-style map database called Cartoko recently launched. The site currently has over 4,000 maps and they welcome contributions. Another site offering free 1:24K USGS topos online is Libre Map Project.
- The National Library of Australia has a new maps search.
