Notes from the Wake for Stan Stevens and Phil Hoehn at the Vancouver WAML

by Katherine Rankin

Conference on August 10, 2023

One person said that Stan was hilarious, amazing, and vivacious when he spoke at the 50
the WAML anniversary conference in Austin, Texas. Another person said that he had a number of jobs, and when he cut back on his jobs, it took three people to replace him. He analyzed the maps of California in the map collection at UCLA in order to help them justify hiring a map cataloger.
A person said that Phil was an excellent map cataloger. He cataloged some local fire
insurance maps. Phil also cataloged a warehouse book, which had to do with river traffic
and documented the end part of the water infrastructure. During a Zoom meeting in
November 2022, not too long before he passed away, he finished work on an exhibit for
the California Map Society.
Stan was a charter member of WAML and had many important jobs in the organization
such as treasurer and newsletter editor. Some of his goals for WAML were to meet in Las
Vegas, Nevada, in Hawaii, and in Alaska. All those goals have been fulfilled as WAML
met twice in Las Vegas, three times in Hawaii, and once in Alaska. Stan was a gentleman, a
scholar, and someone who always encouraged new map librarians. Even though he had
been retired for quite a while, his passing has left a hole in the organization. Phil was also a
sweet man who did a lot for map cataloging and was a faithful member of WAML.
