Take Your Maps With You! (with ArcGIS Field Maps)

Have you ever wanted to have a historical map in your pocket, one you could zoom into and see exactly where you are in real time? For individuals and institutions with an Esri ArcGIS Online subscription, ArcGIS Field Maps is a mobile app you should know about. Field Maps is designed for mobile data collection – for example, a survey team can use it to capture points or polygons and fill out forms. But it’s also useful for simply viewing GIS data and overlaying your location on that data. The goal of this workshop is to introduce you to the app, share tips I learned the hard way, and prepare you to teach your patrons and campus GIS users how to add this tool to their digital workflow. Everyone is welcome to attend and follow along, even if you don’t have an active Esri license. We will create a public map that can be viewed on any mobile device, so plan to bring a phone or tablet that you can install the Field Maps app onto. Optionally, if you would like to publish your own layers and create your own Field Maps experience, please make sure you have an active Esri license, bring a computer, and prepare some raster and/or vector datasets ahead of time.
Online Guide to Map Collections – WAML Edition

The ALA Map and Geography Round Table’s Guide to U.S. Map Resources was published in print for three editions and then reintroduced as Online Guide to U.S. Map Collections. When it became difficult for the original stewards to continue maintaining the resource, WAML members expressed interest in its ongoing availability to the map library community. A small group was charged to discuss if and how we could help keep the project online, and we decided to include it as a fixture of our Map Librarian’s Toolbox. In this workshop, we will draw on our collective professional knowledge to update and strengthen this important resource, identifying what remains useful, what should be revised, and what new information should be added. We will also discuss strategies for expanding the project beyond the United States and making it more internationally relevant. Contributions are welcome from all participants, whether in the form of information about map collections, suggestions for future development, or technical expertise to help sustain and improve the project.
