I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Mary for many years, from her days at Central Washington through UCSB, in WAML, MAGIRT and the UC/Stanford Map Librarians Group.  I immediately knew she was someone special who would be going places.  Mary was a continuing source of inspiration and sound, practical advice.  I lived by one of her “commandments”:  Concentrate resources on cataloging the map collection because of the many vital benefits that action would provide, most importantly giving users a fighting chance to discover through the catalog relevant cartographic materials even in the absence of dedicated map staff.
