Hello WAML!

I cannot wait to see many of you at our Annual Meeting in Austin! As I write this, Katherine Strickland (University of Texas) and I are finalizing the meeting program, and it has come together nicely. We have a great lineup of speakers and programming that will speak to us about map and geospatial information discovery, classification, access, and outreach. We will be hearing from some fantastic Map and GIS Librarians. This year’s meeting is a special occasion, as it marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of our organization. We are hoping to mark the occasion in style!

I would like to take a moment to recognize a true legend in our field, Mary Larsgaard, who passed in July. I have to admit that I am one of the few in our field who did not know Mary—I became a librarian about the same time Mary retired from UCSB. It was a pleasure reading all of the memories everyone shared of her on the WAML and Maps-L listservs. Even though I never knew Mary, she did affect my career in a very big way: a donation to WAML from Mary (along with Paige Andrew) provided funds for the first ever WAML Student Scholarship. Receiving that scholarship introduced me to many wonderful Map and GIS Librarians and helped me get started in my career in librarianship. I owe Mary my gratitude.

This issue of the Information Bulletin continues honoring WAML’s 50th with several reflections from WAML members past and present about their careers and their experiences in WAML. I hope you enjoy it.

See you in Austin,

Phil White
